Poke bowl

I’m sorry. This is not an Italian dish. But it was so hard to accomplish here in Italy I decided to post a picture. I had not heard of a poke bowl until I saw a post about it. It looked so good and so summery and cool I knew I had to make it. Unlike in the US, you cannot just go and buy sushi quality tuna which is what is required. People don’t use raw fish here. I asked our sweet friends at Calagrana if they could get some for me from their supplier. The answer was yes! A kilo of the prettiest sushi quality tuna was my reward today.

I made my first poke salad tonight. It was delicious and cool. A bit spicy and full of vegetables. I understand it comes from Hawaii and has become popular in the US and the UK. Here is my dinner.

No, but the difficulty in getting the ingredients here I thought was blog worthy. It’s not something I could do everyday, that’s for sure. Sushi grade fish is not a thing here.

Oh Marjorie this sounds wonderful. Wow. All the variations. I did have brown rice under the fish and avocado. But mango and all the other options sound so yum. Please do send the picture.

Every family in Hawaii has its own recipes for their poke but it starts with sushji-grade fish , seaweed salad, avocado, sesame oil and seeds, along with their own blend of flavorings. At my local pokebowl place, one starts with a base of brown rice or mixed salad greens, then your choice of protein: salmon, shrimp, chicken or tofu. Add -ons include mango, avocado, hot peppers to name a few. One chooses a “dressing ” like sesame or ginger, then crunchy toppings. It gets shaken. It’s wonderful! I’ll send a picture when I go tomorrow.

It was super refreshing. This type of thing is my go-to meal nowadays. Getting the sushi grade fish is hard. I also got two sushi grade sea bass. Ceviche is next!!

That looks absolutely delectable, Nancy. Mary has a recipe book of bowls and the ones she’s made have been amazing like yours looks.
