I’ve been reflecting on my trip to the US. I must confess, I do not miss living there. The random things that I noticed:
- The restaurant servers all want to not only serve me my food, they want to be my best friend!
- Prices have either really gone up a LOT, or I am too used to Umbria prices. Gasp!
- Sales people are very helpful and friendly.
- There were a TON of rats in DC.
- I knew there were a lot of commercials for pharmaceuticals but it has gotten MUCH worse. I read only two countries allow this, the US and New Zealand. It was relentless.
- There was nothing on the news except for the election.
- There is a building boom like nowhere else in the world going on, at least in the DC area.
- Virginia is The most beautiful state 🙂
- Autumn is as pretty as I remembered it to be.
- I still love Chesapeake Bay oysters better than any others!
- Coffee is still really bad there…compared to Italy that is!
happy to be back in Umbria!
Barbara, please do send an email. nancy22314 at yahoo dot com. I looked up your address and see SVU is in Buena Vista. My moms family is from Buchanan and I had an uncle and family in Buena Vista. Thank you for the nice comment.
late at night after a long day of work here in Virginia but thinking or our upcoming trip to Umbria and did a Google and found this entry. Hope to write more and make serious contact with you. Still working in US but have home in Umbria. Married US Italian. Lots to tell. Many blog/sites are silly but yours is not.

Hi John, quick reply here but will email in more detail. Agree Umbertide is small and quiet. Our friends from Househunters agree with that. I’ll send suggestions. Glad my notes help. I keep adding to them. I miss the ethnic food I could get in DC both for dining out and being able to find ingredients. I will say, the longer I’m here the more ingredients I can dig up. Still, all the Americans go home with at least one empty suitcase to fill up with goodies they miss! 😊
There are so many rats in DC and they are getting as bold as squirrels. I think a lot of it has to do with the construction going on. My partner and I would love to live in Italy and now the Trump is our President, well, who knows? Your town looks lovely but maybe a little too small for us. Would you have any suggestions of larger towns in Umbria? I am reading up on your notes about moving there too, thanks for posting that information! I saw the HH episode with your friends and have a couple of questions. I was wondering what is it like to be a gay couple living in a small town in Umbria? Do you miss the convenience of the US? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
I just returned from a mini cruise with classmates from high school, jr high and elementary school. I am planning a trip to Sedona AZ in December. Ciao
And I, you! It was good meeting you here in Umbertide…
Glad you are back safe and sound.
