143 positive cases in Umbria.
First case in Umbertide! An old man who has been put in isolation. He lived in a casa di riposo or nursing home. Now all the staff, residents and families are quarantined. Had to happen sooner or later I guess. I hope he gets better soon.

The nightly concerts from windows and balconies around Italy continue. It raises the spirits and makes everyone come together. A man named Oliver Clark wrote a very moving tribute…here is just a piece of it…
“You can take away their livelihoods, their cafes, restaurants, theatres and even their beloved football, but nothing it seems can dampen the joy for life of the Italian people.”
Amen.

Now I’m on my high horse for a bit…Listen to me!! I speak from experience. In reality the US should be thinking of themselves/yourselves! What is it with people there? They/you are all solicitous of us here (thank you…) but don’t you realize that our world will be your world shortly? I just shake my head. I keep trying to tell them/you. Sadly, you are following in the footsteps of Italy. People there are still not taking it seriously. OMG the spring break pictures!! Geez…bring it back to your family and friends! This will result in many more infections 😢. You are a few weeks behind us here. You need to close all venues where people gather. ALL of them. Restaurants, bars, discos. Please people…my friends…self isolate. No restaurants, no bars, no gatherings of any sort. Stay at home. It’s not that hard. And if everyone does it, it “shouldn’t” be that long…We hope…

All my good thoughts! Stay safe 💕
Thank you Carlo. I will publish that in a post…
Johns Hopkins University, where I work at a research laboratory, has one of the best websites for COVID-19 information: coronavirus.jhu.edu being maintained by Johns Hopkins Medicine. They have received a number of accolades for being one of the most comprehensive, reliable, current sources of information.
Good news!
Bay Area counties will be closed down as of midnight tonight, just like in Italy. Finally!
I am happy Massachusetts is doing such a good job…I wonder how less progressive places like, say, Alabama are doing? I go by what I hear from friends back home. So many live in places where activities are going on as normal. Restaurants bars gatherings. They go out to dinner or drinking. Other friends say life is the same as always. Some openly flaunt it. The pictures of spring break were appalling. They will take that virus back to family and friends. It will scatter like dandelion fluff. Very irresponsible. And the key phrase in your comment was “intelligent people are heeding the words”. There are a lot of people who are not intelligent, I guess.
You stay safe!
Sadly probably not singing. And it is the perfect storm. Uninsured or underinsured, homeless compounded by lack of competent leadership. If ever we needed someone strong and sure at the helm, now is the time. 😢 keep safe!
Good to hear. In the end we take responsibility for our actions but sometimes our irresponsible actions affect others. People need to use their heads. And I agree. This disaster is just made worse by the vacuum at the top…not just the vacuum but the utter incompetence. Sad. Stay safe.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Time will tell. All the world has to get through this so there are a lot of moving parts. Maybe Italy I’ll be getting out of it by then…just no way to know. Stay safe!
Grazie!
Hi Nancy, So sorry to hear COVID19 has reached your town. I hope you and yours will be ok.
I’m not sure why you think everyone in the U.S. is being solicitous?? I can’t speak for the whole country, but aware, intelligent people are heeding the words of Dr. Anthony Fauci from the CDC.
Here in Massachusetts the governor took the most restrictive measures in the country: closed schools, universities, churches. No gatherings of more than 25 people. Restaurants are only allowed to serve take-outs and deliveries, St.Patrick’s Day Parade and Boston Marathon are cancelled, no non-essential elective surgeries. In Massachusetts, we have increasingly rising numbers of the virus. Westchester County in New York State is now a hot zone. Slowly but surely, citizens ( except Pro-Trumpers) are taking precautions.
My prayers are with the people of Italy. Stay safe.
Nancy, please email me at tenzin.shakya@abc.com I’d like to speak to you about your experience in Italy and this blog re Corona Virus. Are you able to facetime or skype today?
Thank you Nancy – and don’t let up on us in USA. I am very worried because of 80 million uninsured, homless and underinsured here. And dare I add the number of guns? we wont be singing to each other…!
Yes indeed , there is no leadership here in America. An imbecile was elected President and it is a sorry act . We are hanging at our home with limited exposure.
Thanks for the blog & the current updates. Have been following blog for a year. We have 4 week “scouting” trip planned for this summer but not looking good right now. Ristare sicuro.
Brava Nancy; Ben detto! Stammi bene!
